Lectures are read by famous scientist of Ukraine and the United States, Canada, Germany, Poland and Slovakia. Musical and Pedagogical Faculty maintains close scientific, creative relationships with the departments of music Humanities and Natural Sciences University of Jan Kochanowski , Institute of Music University of Rzeszow (Rzeszow), University of M. Curie-Sklodowska (Lublin); Poloniyna Academy in Częstochow and others.

Faculty prepares teachers of music at full-time and extramural departments such as specialties of “Musical Art” ,”Musical Art. Specialization: Art Culture “educational levels of “Bachelor “,” Specialist “,” Master “. The best students, who showed a tendency to scientific work ,are directed to postgraduate studies in the fields of “Pedagogy” and “Music Art”. 123 full-time students and 194 extramural students were studying at the faculty in the 2011/2012 academic year.

Gifted young people have opportunity to develop their creative abilities through taking part in artistic groups, such as Folk choral chapel “Gaudeamus” (directed by Stephen Datsyuk), male chamber choir “Boyan Drohobytskiy” (directed by Peter Hushovatyy), Bandura Ensemble (directed by Stephanie Pinchak ), folk instrumental ensemble “Namysto(Necklace)” (directed by Olexandra Tymkiv), Chamber Orchestra (directed by assistant professor Yuriy Chorniy ), vocal-instrumental ensemble “Perehrestya(Crossroads)” (directed by Nazar Poloviy). Students are members of national vocal and choreographic ensemble “Prolisok(Snowdrop)” (leader Yuri Dobush) Municipal chamber choir “Legend” (directed by Igor Tsyklinskiy), male chamber choir “Boyan Drohobytskiy” (directed by Peter Hushovatiy) and other.

Our students have great success in sport and KVK team has been on the top of three the best in university for many years. The administration of university pays a great attention to organization of annual conferences, professional competitions of vocalists, conductors, pianists, accordionists. Regional competitions of young singers named after Nicholas Kopnin, the International Competition of Accordionists, “Vichnyi Ruh” (“Perpetuum mobile”), choral contest named after Severin Sapruna, Festival of Children’s song “We are your children, Ukraine,” art contest “Musician Talents” became popular. The concerts of “School Philharmonic” became a tradition that are held in the city schools with students’ participating.

Music and Pedagogic Faculty has sufficient material and technical base, which provides the necessary conditions for students and teachers: qualitative tools, a laboratory, equipped with audio and video aids, photocopying and computer facilities, a collection of recordings of Ukrainian and world music, library of musical and musicological literature , which is constantly updated with new additions, the concert hall is compact and has excellent acoustics

Full-time education: Acceptance is on the state and paid order for 4-year and 2-year training EQL “Bachelor” specialty 6.020204 Musical Art. Specialization – artistic culture.

Persons who have received secondary education are enrolled in groups of 4-year course of studying

Persons who have completed higher education (music department), musical teaching, music education 1-2 levels of accreditation and received EQL “Junior Specialist” are enrolled in groups of a two-year period of study.

Entrants of 4-year course of study:

  • certificates of external testing of the Ukrainian language, history of Ukraine;
  • creative competition, which consists of two parts:

1)play a musical instrument (the entrant must perform – 2 pieces (optional entrant)   and sing a song with own accompaniment);

2)oral tasks on solfeggio and music literature from Children Music School programme

Entrants of 2-year period of study (based on EQL “Junior Specialist”):

  • creative competition, which consists of two parts:
  • play a musical instrument. An entrant must perform the program of three pieces: a large form or polyphony or pieces , to sing a song with own accompaniment;
  • oral tasks on music theory, solfeggio and music literature in the volume of relevant disciplines of universities 1-2 levels of accreditation.

Extramural studies (the state and paid order are received only by those who have completed higher music institutions 1-2 levels of accreditation and received EQL “Junior Specialist”): Direction of preparation 6.020204 “Musical Art. Specialization: Art Culture “- shortened (two) training period.

Entrance examinations:

  • creative competition, which consists of two parts:

1) play a musical instrument. An entrant must perform the program of three pieces: 1) a large form or polyphony, 2) piece 3) to sing a song with own accompaniment.

2) oral tasks of music theory, solfeggio and music literature in the volume of relevant disciplines of universities 1-2 levels of accreditation.

EQL “specialist” 7.02020401 specialty Musical Art. Specialization: Art Culture (are accepted people on the base of educational levels “bachelor” specialty “Music Art”). Entrance examinations on speciality. Duration of training – 1 year. Graduates are given the qualification of “Teacher of music, ethics, aesthetics and artistic culture of school of the first, second and third degree.”

EQL “master” 8.02020401 specialty Musical Art (accepting people based on educational levels “bachelor” and “specialist” training area “Music Art”). Entrance tests in a foreign language and professional disciplines to the extent existing programs EQL “Bachelor”. Duration of training – 1 year. Graduates are awarded the qualification of “Master of Musical Arts. Teacher (piano, violin, accordion, bandura music theory courses, choral conducting, vocal). “

Persons who have purpose-oriented direction are enrolled in a separate competition.

The chair of musicology and piano (its first title was ” the Theory, history of music and playing musical instruments “)was founded in 1966. The direction of scientific researches:

The main attention of the teacher stuff is focused around the problems of learning of Ukrainian musical culture through the all music-cultural process and the European dimension, as well as a comprehensive study of Ukrainian music in the context of contemporary world culture and education.

Assistant professors actively cooperate with scientific institutions such as: the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology of Ukraine, the Institute of Education of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Institute of Art, Folklore and Ethnology named after Maxim Rylskiy, National Pedagogical University named after Mycola Drahomanov National Music Academy named after Peter Tchaikovsky, National music Academy Mykola Lysenko and others.

National Men’s Chamber Choir “Boyan Drohobytskiy”

Bojan Drohobytskiy was founded in 1901. Severin Saprun( a priest, an artistic and social activist and a songwriter )had ruled the choir since 1922. The choir was led by graduate of Prague Conservatory, a pianist and conductor Bogdan P’yurko since 1932. Composer Igor Sonevitskiy, pianist Roman Savitskiy, tenor soloist Michael Golinskiy, opera singer Olga Lepkova-Yastremska and others cooperated with the choir in those days. The choir performed works of composers of the Middle Ages (O.Lasso, Zhosken Despre, G. Cachini), concert program of works by J. Strauss, S.Liudkevych, V.Barvinskoho, O.Nyzhankivskoho, Revutsky, Lysenko, Slavs Slavic songs (Czech, Belarusian, Russian), choruses from operas Lysenko, D.Sichynskyi, A.Vahnyanyna. O.Borodina. Oratorio “Messiah” H.F.Hendelya, “Stabat Mater” D.Rossini were a separate section of the repertoire of the “Boyan”. The choir performed program of Christmas carols, Schedrivkas, a play “Bethlehem Night,” which increasingly were supplemented with new performers every year.

The team achieved recognition in 1942, when they acted on the Krayeva competition of choirs dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mykola Lysenko. “Drogobych Boyan” won the first place and was awarded a laurel wreath and the conductor – a special trampoline. The leaders of the choir, as well as its members moved to the West after 1944, where they were taking part in the artistic life as a part of various choirs for a long time. The choir resumed activities in the form of male chamber choir at Drohobych Pedagogical University named after Ivan Franko in 1991. The initiators of the revival and the first conductor were Michael Burban, Stephen Datsyuk and Peter Hushovatiy. The chorus consists of professors of university and teachers from Drohobych. The works of national and Western classical music, sacred music, folklore in arrangements of Lysenko, M.Leontovych, S.Liudkevych, A.Kushnirenka, D.Kotka, Ye.Kozaka, A. Gnatishina, V.Paschenka, J. Yatsynevych constitute the repertoire of the choir . “Drogobych Boyan” takes part in the artistic life of Drohobych, sings in secular concerts in churches of Drohobych, it is a member of five festivals of modern Ukrainian music “Strings of our souls” (Drohobych) competition choirs named after Severin Saprun (Drohobych, 1997, 2000) successfully performed at international festivals “Found music” in Tarnow (Poland, 1996, 1999), Choral Music “Lviv-98”, “Advent-2000” in Vienna (Austria), church Music in Krakow (Poland, May 2001). The team became the winner (First Prize) of IV-Ukrainian Choral Competition named after Mykola Leontovich in Kiev in 2002. In May 2004, “Bojan Drohobych” participated in the I-st International Festival of male choirs “song comes to an end on Uzh” (Uzhgorod).

In June 2004, the choir received the third prize at the International Competition of Choral Music in m.Preveza (Greece).

December 2004 – “Bojan Drohobych” participated in “Christmas concerts” in Holland.

In March 2005 – the choir won the first prize at the International Festival and Competition in m.Kolereyn (Northern Ireland).

In November 2005, the team won the second place in the prestigious competition. F.Shuberta in Vienna (Austria).

In December 2006, “Bojan Drohobych” made a concert tour in France.

In 2007, the choir participated in international choral festivals in Poland: “Festival of Christmas Carols” (Yaroslaw) Festival “Seleziyanske Summer” (Przemysl), “Festival of Three Cultures” (in Stzhyzhuv).

In January 2008 the choir “Boyan Drohobych” participated in the “Festival of Sacred Music” in Budapest (Hungary). The team was preparing a series of concerts dedicated to anniversaries of Ukrainian composers O.Nyzhankivskoho, E. Kozak, Anatoly Kos-Anatolsky, Michael Verbitsky and others during 2009-2010,

The team was holding an International Choral Festival named after Severyn Saprun (to the 110th anniversary of the founding team) from October 30 to November 20, 2011. Soloists: Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine Kornel Syatetskyy, Honored Worker of Ukraine Petro Turiansky, Volodymyr Sych, Andrew Bozhenskiy, Roman Myhats Vladimir Krychkovskiy, Yaroslav Dzendzerovych.
